What a day...
Just to sum it up...
I received a phone call less than 5min after crawling out of bed, that my in-law's barn was on fire and no one knew how to reach my MIL.
Well, that should have been easy since her car was in the shop...she should have been home!
I tossed the kids in the car (not literately) and drove up there (we only live 2 miles away). The ENTIRE barn was engulfed by the time I got there...and still no MIL in sight.
We figure the heat lamps the baby chicks were under is what started it, and I was hoping that she hadn't tried to save the chick (barn fires go quick...all the dry hay and such).
After a few quick phone calls (and still couldn't find her) I grabbed the camera to start taking pictures. I knew that's what she would have been doing. I finally heard the firetrucks and moved my car out of the way for them.
Needless to say, it took over an hour to track her down... she was with my brother-in laws girlfriend. It was nerve wracking not knowing if she was in the fire! We're pretty close and when her car is in the shop, she usually goes places with me or I know when she goes with someone else.
After we knew she was safe, I started a mental toll of what had been in the barn:
Tractor ($40k)
Boat ($30k
Motorcycle ($10k)
4-wheelers ($5k)
Stock trailer ($20k)
all the hay for the livestock this winter
antique saddles...the list goes on.
Even better? They don't have insurance on the barn, only the boat and motorcycle were covered under their own policies. We're still waiting to hear if the barn would have been covered as an outbuilding under the home-owners policy.
They have no savings either. I want to host a 'Rummage Sale', but they're too proud to let me.
I'm just rambling now, but I hope we figure something out soon so we can get some $$ to build a new barn before winter REALLY hits!

This is so sad...horrible, terrible, BUT so glad there is NO loss of life. I can't imagine how your family must feel right now.
BIG HUGS in my prayers
I'm so, so sorry. :(
I wish I were on your coast and could at least come help with the clean up...
I'm so sorry about the barn. I can imagine how difficult this must be so close to winter and without the insurance. I'm really happy to read that no one was hurt.
Oh, I'm so sorry! And SO glad that everyone's okay. Hopefully things will work out and they'll be able to rebuild soon.
Oh my goodness!!! I am so glad no one was hurt, but that is one huge loss.
Sometimes pride doesn't do anyone any good. I hope they will reconsider your help, and please let me/us know if there's anything we can do.
xo
Oh no! What a blessing that she wasn't there though. I think we should bring back the old fashioned neighborhood 'barn raising'. I just wish I was close enough to help you pull it together.
Oh wow!! What a terrible loss! So glad to hear no one was hurt! You took some really great pictures though... Will pray that insurance does come through.
:( terrible!!
